The retainer is a number. The proof is scattered.
Oct 24, 2026
The client asks what shipped. The answer is a doc, a sheet, and a thread. The extra pages were a favor. The retainer invoice goes out anyway.
What the month included
SEO and content retainers are a fee for a cadence: pages, briefs, updates. The site migration, the extra cluster, and the “quick” rewrite are not in that cadence. They happen anyway.
When the client asks for proof, the studio hunts. The invoice cannot point at the signed month, because the signed month and the work are in different places.
The month as a job
Each month is work on the client: pages, briefs, hours, and the signed retainer. Out-of-retainer work is a change order before it is treated as included.
Tickets the client files from their link land on the account, not in a personal inbox. Finance reads the signed lines and the time when the invoice is drafted.
Renewals with the record open
Client 360 holds health, open work, and unpaid invoices on that account. A quiet client with an open retainer is visible before the renewal is a surprise.
CRM keeps the next term as a deal until it is signed. After that, it is the same client and the same job tree.
Seats and the voice line are on the pricing page. Clients are not seats. Book a demo to see the job on one record.
Questions
- How should an SEO agency bill pages outside the retainer?
- As a change order on that client’s job. The client signs the line. The invoice uses the signed retainer plus that line, and any billable time you meant to charge.
- Can the client request a page without emailing a producer?
- They can file a ticket from their PIN link. It lands on the account. It does not send itself to the client as a promise. An owner still approves what goes out.
- Is the content calendar the system of record?
- The calendar can stay where the team already works. The record Blinkdots invoices from is the job: signed scope, time, and money.
